HARRISBURG – Legislation sponsored by state Rep. Sheryl M. Delozier (R-Cumberland) and Rep. Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin) to establish the Traffic Signal Modernization Pilot Program within the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) passed yesterday.
“Cumberland County is the fastest growing county in Pennsylvania. With more people, comes more traffic. Our busy highways can handle more cars, but our small side roads are clogged by lights with old technology. This is not only frustrating, but it holds up our first responders, makes it more dangerous for school busses and frustrates drivers, which leads to more accidents,” said Delozier. “This pilot program shows how technology can be used to keep traffic moving safely and avoids using dollars on widening roads and bridges.”
Under
House Bill 2550, local governments in third- through eighth- class counties would be eligible to apply for grants to install adaptive traffic signal control technology that utilizes sensors to monitor traffic flow and delays. Systems that utilize sensors optimize the timing of traffic signals in real time.
