HARRISBURG – A bill sponsored by Rep. Karen Boback (R-Lackawanna/Luzerne/Wyoming) to rename a portion of U.S. Route 11 in Luzerne County in memory of the late Rep. George Hasay was sent to the governor’s desk for his signature after its unanimous final approval by the House of Representatives this week.
“I am so pleased we are able to honor George Hasay in this way. He was a loyal and civic-minded government official who was dedicated to helping others,” said Boback. “Now anyone who travels this section of highway will forever be reminded of George’s wonderful life of public service.”
Hasay represented the 117th Legislative District for 34 years and was succeeded by Boback when he retired in 2006. Hasay was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1972 at age 23, making him the youngest Pennsylvania state representative to ever serve at that time. He died in February 2021 at age 73.
The measure would designate a portion of U.S. Route 11 in Shickshinny, also known as Main Street, from the intersection with Oak Street to the intersection of State Route 239, as the “Honorable George C. Hasay Memorial Highway.” The bill also directs the PennDOT to erect and maintain signs in both directions displaying the new name.
Boback’s legislation was one of two dozen bridge or highway renaming proposals included in
House Bill 1560.
