HARRISBURG – The House Judiciary Committee today approved a resolution co-sponsored by Rep. Tim O’Neal (R-Washington) to create an investigative Select Committee on Restoring Law and Order as part of an ongoing effort to impeach Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner.
About two weeks ago, O’Neal joined with Reps. Josh Kail (R-Beaver/Washington) and Torren Ecker (R-Adams/Cumberland) to announce they planned to introduce articles of impeachment against Krasner. The resolution approved today is the first step in that process.
“Business owners and residents have responded to our request for information on how they have been impacted by Philadelphia District Attorney Krasner,” O’Neal said. “Now is the time to start moving forward in the process. Without swift action, nothing will change. Some have questioned why a representative from western Pennsylvania should care about that is happening in Philadelphia. It is the Commonwealth’s biggest city and what occurs there affects the entire state.”
House Resolution 216 would create the Select Committee on Restoring Law and Order and consist of five members selected by the Speaker of the House — three Republicans and two Democrats — and have subpoena power.
The committee would examine the effect of Krasner’s failure to enforce criminal laws in Philadelphia, how state public safety funding for Philadelphia has been used, and the extent to which victims’ rights are properly enforced.
In addition to impeachment, and other methods of removal from office, the Select Committee would also be empowered to recommend potential legislative or policy changes that could be made to ensure public safety is guaranteed.
The resolution now goes to the full House for its consideration.
The 48th Legislative District in Washington County includes the city of Washington; Chartiers, North Franklin, North Strabane and South Strabane townships; and Canonsburg, East Washington and Houston boroughs.
