HARRISBURG – Rep. Natalie Mihalek (R-Allegheny/Washington) issued the below statement following the House’s passing of House Resolution 216, which would create a Select Committee on Restoring Law and Order. The committee would be tasked with investigating and making recommendations concerning rising rates of crime, law enforcement and the enforcement of crime victim rights in Philadelphia.

“As crime rates, particularly homicides, have surged in Philadelphia, it is clear that some residents are worried for their safety. Crime victims often come to Harrisburg and seek some kind of response from the General Assembly and it is time to take action.

“The threat of violence impacts families day-in and day-out in Philadelphia. The work prompted by the select committee’s investigation will lay the groundwork for legislation that will make Philadelphia safer and improve the lives of residents who have been held hostage by the constant threat of becoming another victim.

“Whether we are talking about shootings, drug-related crimes or theft, residents are afraid to leave their homes and businesses are afraid to open their doors. Freedoms are stolen and economic growth is stifled. The General Assembly has an important role in determining how this trend can be reversed.”
