HARRISBURG -- Rep. Ron Marsico (R-Lower Paxton) issued the following statement after the General Assembly attempted to override portions of the governor’s budget veto today:
“Last week, the Republican leaders in the House and the Senate went to the governor with a plan to help end the budget impasse and come to an agreement to achieve his budget goal of providing $400 million in funds for basic education. The caveat was that we also enact comprehensive public pension reform and liquor privatization in order to support the additional funding for basic education.
“So far, the governor has not given us an answer, and we are at a crisis point. So today, we attempted to reverse portions of the governor’s veto by focusing on line items in the budget that were at or near the same amount as originally proposed by the governor.
“This would have been the quickest and most efficient way to provide much-needed funds for our schools, rape crisis and domestic violence centers, and some other essential agencies while negotiations continue on the rest of the budget.
“I am hugely disappointed that the overrides failed today. This was our opportunity to immediately help victims of rape and domestic violence, students, cancer patients and children with special needs. We, unfortunately, did not get bipartisan support in our attempt to release these funds. We continue to work hard to enact a budget for Pennsylvanians and, once again, we have been sent back to the drawing board.”
