HARRISBURG – The House fell 21 votes short on its effort to override parts of Gov. Tom Wolf’s unprecedented total budget veto, and Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon) today said the failure to send state budget funding to human service providers in Carbon County and throughout the state is a stunning and callous move on the part of House minority members who voted against overriding the agreed to line items in House Bill 1192.

“The House passed a balanced budget on June 30, only to have it vetoed by the governor in a matter of 45 minutes, the governor didn't even take time to review these line items before he rejected the proposal in its entirety” said Heffley. “My colleagues and I tried to get the full House to vote favorably on line items where there was agreement on the spending level. That failed to get the required two-thirds majority in each case. This rejection of funds for valuable and vital human service providers is a direct slap in the face to the residents of Pennsylvania.”

Heffley said he met recently with service providers in his district and heard about the problems they are facing as funding is held up in Harrisburg.

“The conversations I had with our Carbon County providers who help our residents in need were very clear; they need funding, and they need it now,” said Heffley.

Among the services that were voted down for funding release were rape crisis centers, domestic violence assistance, Safe School initiatives, community-based health care for the disabled and the state food purchase program that is absolutely essential to our local food pantries.
