HARRISBURG – The $42.8 billion budget passed this week by the House helps vulnerable Pennsylvanians by expanding the Property Tax/Rent Rebate program for older and disabled adults, investing in energy assistance for low-income families, making historic investments in Pre-K Counts and Head Start, and creating a child care tax credit at the state level, according to Rep. Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin).
Mehaffie advocated for his priorities, which include road and bridge improvements, an additional 200 troopers for the Pennsylvania State Police, a lowered Corporate Net Income Tax rate, and allocations of federal stimulus dollars to long-term care providers, including nursing homes.
“While I recognize the Legislature failed to meet its June 30 deadline to pass a budget, the overall product we made is a good one,” Mehaffie said. “The budget helps seniors and children in need. I encourage my colleagues to finalize this budget quickly. We owe it to our school districts and state agencies to provide them with solid information about 2022-23 funding.”
Mehaffie highlighted the budget’s commitment to the agricultural community, including $4 million in additional funding for testing related to avian flu, African swine fever, and other threats to the meat and poultry supply chain. There is a 5% increase to the Penn State Extension, which helps the ag community with science-based education and information.
The House sent the budget to the Senate for a concurrence vote, then it will go to the governor’s desk.
