HARRISBURG—The House today passed a resolution sponsored by Rep. Todd Stephens (R-Montgomery) declaring September Upper Dublin Strong Month in Pennsylvania.
“It’s so critical that we remember the unimaginable losses endured by our community during the Sept. 1, 2021, tornado caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ida,” Stephens said. “We are still struggling to rebound from this disaster, repair the damage, and find the funds for those failed by insurance companies.”
House Resolution 226 recognizes the resilience and unity of the people of Upper Dublin Township, who joined forces to assist those affected in the tornado of Sept. 1, 2021.
In late afternoon on Sept. 1, 2021, an 8-mile-long by 400-yard-wide EF-2 tornado associated with Hurricane Ida barreled through portions of the Upper Dublin community. In a brief 14-minutes, the tornado left unimaginable devastation in its wake.
Adding to the tragedy, the storm brought 130-mile-per-hour winds and five hours of rain that claimed one life and caused millions of dollars in damages to more than 1,500 public, private and institutional properties.
The storm displaced more than 115 families; forced the relocation of the Upper Dublin Township Police Department and Administrative Offices; necessitated the reassignment of Fort Washington Elementary School students; and interrupted local business operations and permanently changed the landscape of Fort Washington and Ambler.
“This resolution also honors the countless first responders, staff, volunteer community organizations and business owners who graciously and generously contributed their time, energy and other resources to aid and support those impacted by the events of Sept. 1, 2021.
“I want to thank my colleagues for standing with us as we continue to rebuild,” Stephens said.
