HARRISBURG – Legislation promoting greater father involvement has passed unanimously in the Senate, Rep. Lori Mizgorski (R-Allegheny) announced.

House Bill 1731 would establish the Pennsylvania Advisory Committee on Greater Father Involvement within the Joint State Government Commission (JSGC). The committee would be tasked with thoroughly examining the role of fathers in the Commonwealth and would make recommendations for changes to policies and laws that impede father-child relationships. Additionally, it would recommend programs and support systems to help men realize their full potential as fathers.

“It took three years to get this bill through the House and Senate, but I am pleased to say we did it,” said Mizgorski. “Dr. Rufus Sylvester Lynch of the Stronger Families Commission was a tremendous help in making this happen. Together, we accomplished the first step in making Pennsylvania a place where fathers and families are valued and strengthened.”

Approximately 35% of children are raised in single-parent households and many do not have access to the financial and emotional support of fathers. Studies have shown children benefit when both parents are fully engaged in their lives.

“Getting this bill through the legislative process was one of my final goals before my term ends on Nov. 30,” Mizgorski concluded. “I am so thankful to everyone who helped make that happen.”

The bill now heads to the governor’s desk for signature into law.
