HARRISBURG – The 2023-24 budget proposal presented by Gov. Josh Shapiro today would increase state expenditures by 5.9%, outstripping the Commonwealth’s rate of growth. As with past budget proposals from former Gov. Tom Wolf, Shapiro’s budget wish list would grow government at an unsustainable rate, according to Rep. Paul Schemel (R-Franklin).
Shapiro presented a $45.8 billion proposal to the General Assembly, calling for a $2.5 billion spending increase.
“Responsible Pennsylvania families manage their households by keeping their spending in check; they should expect nothing less from their state government,” Schemel said. “The coming months will be spent negotiating a budget more realistic than what the governor shared with us.”
The state budget must be in place by July 1.
