HARRISBURG – Rep. Rosemary M. Brown (R-Monroe/Pike) voted Saturday in favor of the legislative budget proposal which would spend $30.18 billion, includes no tax increases, and is a fiscally responsible plan that lives within our means while still providing for core state budget priorities. After the vote, Brown issued the following statement:
“I support this legislative budget proposal for a number of specifics reasons, but overall, I support it because it represents a fiscally responsible spending plan that includes notable increases for some important, core government services the citizens of Pennsylvania rely upon without increased taxation on households.
“Education spending remains a top priority, and I believe it is crucial that our state budget fairly distributes its funding across the Commonwealth. Under the budget passed today, several notable increases were included for some of the Department of Education’s most important line items, including a $100 million increase for basic education funding. This plan also fully funds the Act 120 required school employee retirement contribution payments at $1.7 billion. Nearly all areas of higher education were increased by 3 percent under this budget plan, which would equate to an increase of approximately $41 million for higher education helping to keep our state tuition rates affordable for families and students.
“A 10 percent increase for domestic violence and rape crisis programs was included in this spending plan, which would equal a $2.4 million increase between the two line items. Additionally, increases were dedicated for veterans homes and the Pennsylvania State Police, which will receive funding for four classes, a total of 350 troopers.”
