HARRISBURG – Rep. Tim Krieger’s (R-Delmont) legislation to develop and implement a drug testing and retesting program for public assistance applicants and certain recipients (
House Bill 1380) was advanced by the House Health Committee today for consideration on the House floor.
“The simple and straightforward purpose of House Bill 1380 is to ensure that taxpayer-provided welfare benefits are not used to facilitate the use of illegal drugs,” said Krieger.
Act 22 of 2011 established a drug testing program for public assistance recipients with previous felony drug convictions. In an effort to further ensure that taxpayer-paid public benefits are not used to fund the abuse of illegal drugs, Krieger’s legislation would a create a program requiring the screening of public assistance applicants for drug use, with a further testing requirement for welfare recipients based upon reasonable suspicion.
