HARRISBURG – Rep. Stephen Bloom (R-Cumberland) today applauded members of the House State Government Committee for their unanimous support of a measure that would allow the Borough of Carlisle to sell a portion of park land along the Pennsylvania Turnpike with proceeds to be reinvested in parks and recreational development.
The portion of land is a strip of the borough-owned Shaffer Park, along the existing legal right-of-way line of the westbound lanes of the turnpike in North Middleton Township. The land is needed to complete a widening project.
“I’m pleased to play a role in helping facilitate the reinvestments of the proceeds from the park land needed to improve the turnpike for new recreational uses in our community,” Bloom said.
Senate Bill 620, which was introduced by Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York), statutorily removes sales restrictions on land previously purchased with the help of state Project 70 funds.
Under the bill, money obtained from the sale of the land will be put in a special fund to be used only for the development of park and open-space lands of the Borough of Carlisle.
“I appreciate Representative Bloom’s proactive efforts to position this bill for consideration, and his diligent advocacy for its passage, including appearing and speaking on its behalf at our voting meeting at 7:30 this morning, effectively shepherding the legislation,” said House State Government Committee Chairman Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler).
Senate Bill 620 now heads to the full House for consideration.
“I appreciate Senator Vance’s work in introducing this timely measure and securing its passage in the Senate,” Bloom added. “I look forward to swift approval in the House.”
