HARRISBURG – In an effort to prevent individuals from receiving public assistance from multiple states, Rep. Aaron Kaufer (R-Luzerne) introduced crucial legislation in the state House on Tuesday which would require Pennsylvania to share information with its surrounding states about public assistance applications.
“Simply put, Pennsylvania’s public assistance dollars should be spent on those in need who live here,” said Kaufer. “It is essential these resources are assuredly going to help those who truly need them, and not those scamming the system.”
House Bill 1322 will require the Department of Human Services to notify other states which were previously providing assistance to an individual or family once an application is made and approved here in Pennsylvania.
“Cross-state applications are a real and growing problem that contributes to fraud, waste and abuse within our public assistance system, and I believe this is the first step in fixing that,” Kaufer explained.
This is the first piece of legislation Kaufer has introduced since taking office in January.
