HARRISBURG – Rep. Tim O’Neal (R-Washington) this week was named to three House standing committees for the remainder of the 2017-18 legislative session.
His committee assignments are Environmental Resources and Energy, Gaming Oversight, and Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness.
“With my experience as a member of Army, I will be able to provide an important perspective to the Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee,” O’Neal said. “In addition, as my district includes the Meadows Racetrack and Casino, I’m pleased to be able to advocate as a member of the Gaming Oversight Committee for this important Washington County employer and tourism generator. Finally, my work on the Environmental Resources and Energy Committee will allow for me to champion a balance between policies that allow for the growth of the Marcellus Shale industry, while also protecting our environment.”
O’Neal served in the ROTC program while in college and then on active duty in Afghanistan after graduation, rising to the rank of captain. While in combat, he was awarded the Bronze Star with “V” for valor.
The Environmental Resources and Energy Committee is responsible for legislative oversight of 45 different environmental laws in place in the Commonwealth, administered by both the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). The committee addresses legislation involving clean air, land and water; radioactive and other waste disposal; recycling; and more.
The Gaming Oversight Committee is responsible for overseeing Pennsylvania's gaming industry, including the dealings of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. The committee is required to carefully examine all future legislation regarding gaming and the state’s gambling industry before it reaches the full House of Representatives for consideration. The committee also reviews regulations to make certain they are consistent with legislative intent of Act 71 of 2004 and Act 135 of 2006.
The Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee focuses on the needs of Pennsylvania’s first responders and veteran community, as well as works to keep all Commonwealth residents safe. For example, a key focus this session will be the recruitment and retention of the state’s emergency responders.
The 48th Legislative District in Washington County includes the city of Washington; Chartiers, North Franklin, North Strabane and South Strabane townships; and Canonsburg, East Washington and Houston boroughs.
