HARRISBURG—The Sportsmen Voter Registration Act, legislation that will ensure the availability of voter registration applications any time a hunting or fishing license is applied for, was introduced last week by Rep. David H. Rowe (R-Snyder/Union/Mifflin/Juniata), chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee.
Sportsmen—hunters and anglers—are vital to Pennsylvania. They are economic drivers, conservationists, and defenders of the long-standing Pennsylvania traditions of hunting and fishing. Yet, it is estimated that up to 30% of hunters in Pennsylvania are not registered to vote. This is where Rowe saw a need to raise the voice of Pennsylvania sportsmen.
Applying for a hunting or fishing license may be the most consistent interaction a sportsman has with state government. By making voter registration applications available when applying for a hunting or fishing license, we can encourage greater civic participation by this crucial portion of the public.
“Pennsylvania’s hunters and anglers are some of the most engaged citizens in our state, but too often their busy seasons in the field and on the water make it harder for them to register to vote,” said Rowe. “This legislation ensures Pennsylvania sportsmen have greater access to voter registration, so they can have a voice in the policies that impact our land, wildlife, and way of life.”
