HARRISBURG – Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre/Mifflin) is praising the passage of
Senate Bill 1090, which gained unanimous support today in the House of Representatives. Sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman (R-34), the bill intended to end hazing is now headed to the governor’s desk.
“No family should ever have to experience the preventable loss of a child because of the reckless and despicable act of hazing,” Benninghoff said. “I pray this law will serve as a strong deterrent for those who might attempt to haze and intimidate their peers, and also provide law enforcement with the tools they need to pursue justice for victims.”
The bill increases penalties for those involved in hazing; requires schools to have policies and reporting procedures in place to stop hazing; and ensures that parents and students are provided with information related to the issue. It also establishes clear-cut parameters on hazing for organizations such as fraternities and sororities.
The Timothy J. Piazza law, named in memory of Tim Piazza, who died after a February 2017 fraternity pledge event, first passed the Senate with unanimous support on April 18. The legislation can now become law with the governor’s signature.
