HARRISBURG – Rep. Jeremy Shaffer (R-Allegheny) issued the following statement with June 30 passing without a new state budget in place.

“One of the most important jobs of the General Assembly is annually adopting a budget.

“I am frustrated we could not come to an agreement by the June 30 deadline, which is required by the Pennsylvania constitution.

“Unfortunately, Harrisburg gridlock is keeping us stuck and preventing forward movement.

“While this budget impasse continues, I will forgo my paycheck because if we can’t do the job the people elected us to do, we shouldn’t be paid.

“Moments like this are a reminder of why I support downsizing the Legislature and making it part-time. Lawmakers should feel the urgency of getting the job done, and on time, just like the hardworking people we represent.

“As we continue budget negotiations, I will be fighting for a budget that helps to grow our economy and is fiscally responsible, balanced and reflective of the needs of our communities.”
