HARRISBURG – In light of a nationwide federal crackdown on Medicaid fraud, which included the arrest of a Bucks County woman who allegedly defrauded Medicaid of more than $1 million, Rep. Seth Grove (R-Dover) said Pennsylvania needs to step up to prevent future crimes against taxpayers.
According to federal officials, criminal charges were laid against 324 defendants, including 96 doctors, nurse practitioners, pharmacists and other licensed medical professionals across the nation for their alleged part in health care fraud schemes involving over $14.6 billion in intended loss.
“The numbers are staggering. To put it into perspective, $14.6 billion is a just shy of a third of the state’s budget, and the figure is just what federal officials found out about. One only knows how much more fraud is going on unnoticed,” Grove said. “State officials need to step up and end Medicaid fraud in the Commonwealth. The first step is for the Legislature to give officials the tools they need.”
To combat fraud in Pennsylvania, the House Republican Caucus introduced a series of bills, the Program Integrity and Innovation package. The comprehensive plan would guarantee Medicaid funds are used for the people who truly need assistance and would ensure taxpayer dollars are used to fund the priorities of Pennsylvanians instead of being used fraudulently or misspent.
“The first step in combatting Medicaid fraud is going after those who commit these crimes. As part of that step, the Commonwealth must have the ability to recoup losses on behalf of taxpayers,” Grove said. “Every misspent or fraudulently used dollar is another dollar hard-working taxpayers have to make up for. It is now up to the Legislature to get to work and fix these problems.”
