HARRISBURG — Rep. Wendy Fink (R-Red Lion) today signed a discharge petition to force a vote on Senate Bill 9, the Save Women’s Sports Act.

Under this legislation, school athletic teams designated for women would not be open to males. The legislation defines “sex” as the biological distinction between male and female, based on reproductive biology and genetic make-up.

The bill passed the Senate with bipartisan support, but it has stalled in the Democrat-controlled House. The discharge petition Fink signed would force the House chamber to consider the bill, so it may be passed and signed into law.

“It’s imperative we protect equal opportunities for female athletes. Allowing a biological male to compete on a women’s team puts all women on the playing field at a disadvantage,” said Fink.

“Sports not only allow women the opportunity to demonstrate their strength and skill, they also provide access to potentially life-changing opportunities, like college scholarships.

“I was proud to be one of the 25 signatures on a discharge petition for Senate Bill 9 and am looking forward to voting in favor of this important legislation,” Fink concluded.

Maintaining separate teams would also fulfil the goals of Title IX, which was designed to end discrimination and create equal athletic opportunities for women.
