HARRISBURG — Rep. Jamie Walsh (R-Luzerne) signed a discharge resolution today that aims to force a vote on
Senate Bill 9, the Protect Women’s Sports Act.
According to this bill, school athletic teams designated for female students would be closed to males. The legislation defines “sex” as the biological distinction between male and female, based on reproductive biology and genetic make-up.
While the measure has stalled in the Democrat-controlled House, it passed the state Senate with bipartisan support. If adopted by a majority vote in the House, the discharge resolution Walsh signed,
House Resolution 281, would require Senate Bill 9 be brought to the floor of the House chamber.
“Protecting equal opportunities for female athletes is critically important. Allowing biological males to compete on women’s teams puts female athletes at an unfair disadvantage and creates barriers to potentially life-changing opportunities, like college scholarships,” said Walsh.
“I was proud to be one of several signatures on a discharge resolution for Senate Bill 9 and am looking forward to voting in the affirmative on the legislation.”
Maintaining teams separated by sex would also fulfill the goals of Title IX, which was designed to end discrimination and create equal athletic opportunities for women.
Questions about the discharge resolution or any other state-related issue can be directed to Walsh’s Dallas office at 570-675-6000 or his Sugarloaf office at 570-359-2138.
