HARRISBURG – Rep. Charity Grimm Krupa (R-Fayette) today voted no on House Bill 2400, the proposed state budget for the upcoming fiscal year, warning that the plan spends billions more than Pennsylvania expects to bring in and relies on draining the Commonwealth’s financial reserves.

The legislation passed the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and now moves to the Senate for consideration.

Grimm Krupa said the proposed budget grows state spending to roughly $53 billion while relying on the state’s surplus and the Rainy Day Fund to close the gap.

“The Rainy Day Fund was created for emergencies, not for politicians who simply want to spend more than taxpayers can afford,” Grimm Krupa said. “This plan spends money Pennsylvania doesn’t have and puts us on a path toward draining the savings meant to protect taxpayers.”

She noted the spending proposal comes as families across the Commonwealth continue to face rising costs.

“Gas is up. Groceries are up. Health care costs are rising. Electric bills, water bills, sewage bills and trash bills continue to climb,” Grimm Krupa said. “Pennsylvania families are tightening their belts, but Harrisburg refuses to do the same.”

Grimm Krupa said the state should focus on eliminating fraud, waste and abusive spending before asking taxpayers for more.

“Every dollar government wastes is a dollar taken from a hardworking Pennsylvania family,” Grimm Krupa said. “The people of Pennsylvania deserve a government that treats their hard-earned money with the same care they do.”

House Bill 2400 now heads to the Pennsylvania Senate for further consideration.

“The people of Pennsylvania work too hard for their money to watch Harrisburg spend it this recklessly,” Grimm Krupa said.
