HARRISBURG – Rep. Stephen E. Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware) took the oath of office today to begin his 10th term representing the people of the 160th District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
“With each new session that I am able to serve the people of Chester and Delaware counties, I am more humbled by the opportunity,” said Barrar. “We will certainly face challenges in what promises to be a robust session, but I am hopeful that we will resolve many of the pressing issues in Pennsylvania.”
Barrar will continue as the majority chairman for the Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, which oversees legislation dealing with veterans’ issues, disaster relief, homeland security, fire and emergency services matters, and the readiness of our Pennsylvania National Guard.
“As one of the few Vietnam War veterans in the Pennsylvania Legislature, it is an honor to chair a committee that is devoted to legislating veterans’ issues,” Barrar said. “I look forward to continuing to work with veterans, the Pennsylvania National Guard and the emergency services community.”
In the upcoming session, Barrar is eager to cultivate relationships by working with his colleagues in the House and the Senate, as well as with the new administration’s state agencies which his committee oversees. He also has a number of goals for the Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, including:
• |
Updating our state 911 Emergency Telephone Act to ensure that our county 911 centers remain adequately funded and technologically viable. |
• |
Modernizing our Title 35 Emergency Management Code. |
• |
Continuing to strengthen recruitment and retention incentives for our volunteer emergency responders. |
• |
Supporting our veteran community and their families by enhancing veterans’ benefit programs. |
• |
Continuing to support our armed forces and their families, and further enhance the mission readiness of our Pennsylvania National Guard. |
“Because veterans have made such incredible contributions to Pennsylvania and the United States, I am looking forward to advancing legislation that will make a real difference in their lives,” said Barrar. “I have always been connected to the veterans’ community in my district, and I am thankful for another opportunity to work with veterans from across the Commonwealth.”
