HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Wolf vetoed earlier this week important legislation that would have improved workforce development in Pennsylvania. In response to the governor’s actions, Rep. Dawn Keefer (R-Dillsburg), a co-sponsor of House Bill 2157, issued the following statement:
“As a co-sponsor of
House Bill 2157, I am extremely disappointed by Gov. Wolf’s irresponsible and unnecessary veto of this significant legislation to improve career and technical education (CTE) in the Commonwealth. This legislation, which would have made it easier for schools to establish and renew vocational programs, received overwhelming bipartisan support in the General Assembly and was backed by the Pennsylvania Association of Career and Technical Administrators, Pennsylvania Association of Agriculture Educators and the Pennsylvania State Education Association. The governor’s veto, and his reasoning for it, makes no sense.
“This legislation would have allowed our schools to adapt the ever-changing and ever-growing manufacturing industry. It would have provided students with additional options to prepare themselves for the workplace. This bill would have allowed the middle class to grow by ensuring students are properly prepared for advanced manufacturing jobs that pay family-sustaining wages. While Pennsylvania, and the country, are witnessing a resurgence in manufacturing, Wolf opted to put petty politics in front of doing what is best for our students, our economy and Pennsylvania.”
