HARRISBURG – Now in his 13th year serving the 14th Legislative District, Rep. Jim Marshall (R-Beaver/Butler) has been appointed to serve as the new majority chairman of the House Gaming Oversight Committee for the 2019-20 legislative session.
“I’m very pleased to receive this appointment, especially with recent news of the proposed Mount Airy Pittsburgh casino in Big Beaver Borough,” Marshall said. “I’ll be able to see firsthand the impacts of oversight on the industry and our communities and take that insight with me to Harrisburg.”
The Gaming Oversight Committee oversees slot machine gaming, bingo, small games of chance, amusement laws and table games in Pennsylvania. In addition to its legislative responsibilities, the committee has oversight of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board and aspects that deal with gaming within the Department of Revenue, the Office of Attorney General and the Pennsylvania State Police.
“I view this responsibility as a chance to ensure integrity in the industry, explore how recent gaming laws and expansions are working, and make sure Pennsylvania citizens and communities are the beneficiaries of industry success,” Marshall said.
Marshall noted that gaming is not only important to Pennsylvania’s tourism industry, but proceeds help fund property tax relief, fire and emergency medical service grants, programs for senior citizens, and the state’s general fund.
“Since the legalization of casino gaming in Pennsylvania, the industry has generated more than $15 billion in tax revenue and now employs 18,000 individuals. In addition, host municipalities and counties rely on revenue to finance public safety efforts, health and human services, and community development projects,” Marshall added. “This industry has a large impact on our communities, and I look forward to working with committee members on both sides of the aisle to preserve it.”
This assignment is Marshall’s first as a committee chairman. He previously served on the House Transportation, Environmental Resources and Energy, Liquor Control, and Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness committees.
