HARRISBURG – Rep. Mark Keller (R-Perry/Cumberland) today was officially appointed majority chairman of the House Commerce Committee for the 2019-20 session by Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny).
“I am pleased to be named to lead this important committee, which focuses on business, finance and economic development here in Pennsylvania,” said Keller. “The Commerce Committee also works on issues affecting consumers, ranging from complaints related to loans and credit cards to problems with cemeteries.”
The committee concentrates its efforts in the following areas of legislation:
• Regulation of the various institutions chartered in Pennsylvania through the Banking Code, the Savings Association Code, the Consumer Discount Company Act, the Pawnbrokers License Act, the Mortgage Bankers and Brokers Act, the Pennsylvania Securities Act and the Credit Union Law.
• Economic and technical development through programs such as the Ben Franklin Partnership, the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority, the Pennsylvania Capital Loan Fund and the Small Business Development Center Program.
• Regulation of offers of sale and credit through statutes such as the Goods and Services Installment Sales Act, the Unfair Sales Act, and the Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Act.
• Corporate governance through the Business Corporation Law.
“The men and women who chair the House committees are getting the work done to prepare legislation for the full House to consider,” Turzai said. “Through public hearings and meetings, committee chairs lead the way by vetting proposed solutions to the serious issues and challenges facing Pennsylvania.”
Turzai also appointed Keller vice-chairman of the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee.
Earlier this week, Keller was sworn into office for an eighth term, representing the 86th Legislative District. This is his second appointment to a committee chairmanship. During the 2017-18 session Keller chaired the House Urban Affairs Committee.
