HARRISBURG – Rep. Garth Everett (R-Lycoming/Union) has been appointed to serve as the majority chairman of the House State Government Committee by Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Alleghany) for the 2019-20 legislative session.
Everett, who is beginning his seventh term in the House, previously served on the Appropriations, Environmental Resources and Energy, Game and Fisheries, and Judiciary committees.
“I believe that citizens deserve a government that is transparent and makes use of taxpayer dollars with frugality,” said Everett. “I’m excited and thankful to be given this opportunity to head an important House committee that is largely responsible for holding government agencies accountable and keeping them transparent for the public. We saw this last session as the committee reported on abuse of taxpayer dollars by the Susquehanna River Basin Commission and made recommendations for holding the regulatory body accountable in the future.
“Of course, the committee is also charged with reviewing legislation dealing with other aspects of state government, such as election code, lobbyist disclosure, legislative term limits and campaign financing,” added Everett. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to improve all aspects of state government to ensure it looks out for the best interests of citizens and responds efficiently to their needs.”
Last session, the State Government Committee successfully saw 13 bills enacted into law and had 60 bills reported out of committee. It held 40 voting meetings, 18 informational meetings and 11 public hearings.
After retiring from the Air Force after over 20 years of service and going on to practice law after graduating from Penn State’s Dickinson School of Law in 2000, Everett ran for and was elected to the House of Representatives for the 84th District in 2006.
