HARRISBURG – Rep. Jesse Topper (R-Bedford/Franklin/Fulton), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement in response to Gov. Tom Wolf’s budget proposal to spend $34.1 billion during the 2019-20 fiscal year:
“I listened intently today as the governor delivered his vision for the budget. I am glad the governor recognized the need to improve workforce development in Pennsylvania, as laid out in a report prepared by the Republican-led House. Increasing workforce development for our students will help ensure they will have the opportunity to come out of school and land good jobs that pay family-sustaining wages to expand and strengthen our middleclass.
“Some of what the governor said did raise alarms for me as a fiscally conservative member of the House. I am concerned by the nearly 3 percent increase in spending over the current budget. I believe the fiscally responsible way to manage the people’s tax dollars is to ensure spending is kept in check and tied to revenue.
“The governor’s address is just the starting point of the budget process. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I look forward to the beginning of budget hearings next week. This will allow us, and the public, to learn more about the proposal. The hearings also afford committee members the opportunity to dig deeper into the proposal and flesh out the details.”
