HARRISBURG – Rep. Jason Ortitay (R-Washington/Allegheny) has been named by Speaker Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) to chair the House Subcommittee on Education under the Appropriations Committee and the House Subcommittee on Higher Education under the Education Committee for the 2019-20 Legislative Session.

“I am honored to have been chosen for these two posts,” Ortitay said. “Education prepares our young people for success as adults. Recently, I introduced legislation to create a commission to develop recommendations on how to move the state’s public education system into the 21st century. Every child gets only one chance at an education. We must do all we can do make sure it is the best.”

The Subcommittee on Education under the House Appropriations Committee is tasked with examining fiscal policy related to PreK-12 education and higher education in the Commonwealth.

The Subcommittee on Higher Education under the House Education Committee will be tackling issues involving students loans, college affordability, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA), and transparency in degrees to better prepare and inform parents and students in order to make the best decisions possible.

The 46th Legislative District includes Collier and South Fayette townships and Bridgeville, Heidelberg, McDonald and Oakdale boroughs in Allegheny County. It also encompasses Canton, Cecil, Mt. Pleasant, Robinson and Smith townships, and Burgettstown, McDonald and Midway boroughs in Washington County.
