HARRISBURG – Rep. Curt Sonney (R-Erie) has been re-elected to the executive committee of the bi-national, nonpartisan Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Legislative Caucus (GLLC) for 2019-20.
“I am honored to once again be chosen to represent Pennsylvania as part of the GLLC,” said Sonney. “Being a part of this caucus has been a fantastic opportunity to work with legislators in other states and Canada in order to improve environmental conditions throughout the Great Lakes region. I look forward to continuing my work with the group and moving forward on new projects sure to impact the water quality, land and habitat encompassing the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River.”
Sonney has been a member of GLLC since 2013. The caucus is comprised of all eight states and two Canadian provinces in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence basin. Sonney represents Pennsylvania.
Looking ahead, Sonney said the policy agenda undertaken by GLLC in Erie will focus on water consumption, aquatic invasive species, toxic substances, nutrient pollution and coastal communities. Some specific objectives include assuring the availability of safe, clean drinking water; reducing nutrient runoff; and supporting sustainable economic development of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence coastal communities, including the restoration and preservation of habitat.
The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River region contains 20 percent of the Earth’s surface fresh water and provides drinking water to more than 40 million U.S. and Canadian residents. It is also home of the third largest regional economy in the world.
