HARRISBURG – Following the governor’s 2018-19 state budget address before a joint session of the House and Senate, state Rep. Judy Ward (R-Blair) offered these comments:
“This year’s budget address was much more conservative in both his anticipated amount of spending and his desire for new taxes; however, it is still $1 billion more than the current fiscal year which is of concern to me and many of my colleagues.
“Although the state’s economic picture is steadily improving, we still need to be careful with our finances and make sure that every dollar we spend is being used to its maximum potential. We have shown over the course of the past couple of years that we can meet our obligations as a state and still invest greatly in areas such as health care, education and public safety without excessive spending or tax increases.
“I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House and Senate to craft a budget that is more fiscally responsible than the one we were presented with today.
“Having said all that, I think the governor showed great restraint in his spending goals, and aside from a tax on natural gas drillers, he also stepped back from the various taxes he proposed in his past two budgets. This gives me hope that we can find some common ground and perhaps come to a state budget agreement in a more timely fashion this year.”
