HARRISBURG – Rep. Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-Northumberland/Snyder) made the following statement after the governor presented his budget address for the 2018-19 fiscal year on Tuesday:

“This annual address marks the beginning of the state budget crafting process. Ultimately, establishing a responsible state budget for the people of Pennsylvania is one of the most important jobs, and I take this requirement seriously. The last three budget cycles have been difficult, partly because the Legislature would not support broad-based tax increases on the people of Pennsylvania or our industries.

“As always, I support our children, and I will continue to ensure that their schools are appropriately funded and that they are getting the resources they need to develop successful futures. I will continue to support early childhood education, as it is the foundation for all future success and learning, and it decreases future costs to taxpayers and creates a stronger workforce. Late last year, I started meeting with our area superintendents, and I plan to do so once a quarter to hear their opinions and concerns. So far, this dialogue has been very helpful, and I appreciate the ideas and suggestions that have been produced. This will be very beneficial as negotiations with the budget and on education policy continue.

“Last month, the heroin and opioid epidemic plaguing the state was declared a statewide disaster by the governor. I support providing our local agencies with the means they need to help assist with this horrific epidemic that is claiming so many lives. This goes along with one of the goals the administration has to enhance coordination and data collection to bolster state and local response. I don’t think we need funding to expand departments in Harrisburg to combat this issue as much as we need resources close to home and on the ground, where I feel programs and direction are in high demand.”
