HARRISBURG – Rep. Craig Staats (R-Bucks) said the $33 billion budget, proposed today by Gov. Tom Wolf, increases state spending by more than $1 billion.
“While the governor’s budget plan for next year is far more modest than those he has proposed in the past, it still spends more than is necessary,” said Staats, who along with his Republican colleagues has insisted on reducing state expenditures and engaging in responsible budgeting that includes funding for education, human services and the other core responsibilities of state government.
“Responsible budgeting means that Pennsylvania spends no more than it brings in,” said Staats. “This strategy, coupled with an improved revenue outlook and the recent federal tax cuts, could even result in a modest surplus at the end of the current fiscal year. We aim to ensure this budget does not unduly burden our taxpayers.”
Budget hearings begin Feb. 20, after which House and Senate leaders and the governor will begin negotiating a final budget plan ahead of the June 30 deadline.
