HARRISBURG – Rep. Kurt A. Masser (R-Columbia/Montour/Northumberland) listened to the governor’s budget address for the 2018-19 fiscal year during a joint session of the General Assembly at the Capitol on Tuesday. Masser made the following statement about his legislative priorities for the upcoming year’s budget:
“Establishing the state budget is one of the most important jobs my colleagues and I have as state legislators. The budgets we create affect every Pennsylvanian in one way or another. When it comes to budgeting, I believe our No. 1 priority should be controlling state spending, and not spending more than we are bringing in. That’s just being a good steward of taxpayer dollars and a fundamental part of responsible budgeting.
“Beyond controlled spending, I’d like to focus on fostering economic development so we can get more people back to work and bring more companies to Pennsylvania. I would like to see more of our kids stay in Pennsylvania after they graduate and thrive here in the Commonwealth. I will continue to support welfare and regulatory reform initiatives that inspire positive economic growth throughout the state. Connecting our business and education communities is another major area we need to focus on to ensure our future workforce is skilled and trained for the jobs that will be available.
“The governor recently declared the Commonwealth’s heroin and opioid epidemic a statewide disaster. Throughout this year’s budget process, I will remain committed to supporting positive efforts addressing opioid and heroin abuse, prevention, education and treatment programs in communities throughout the state. We lost more than 4,600 Pennsylvanians in 2016, and the number of deaths for 2017 is expected to surpass that of the previous year. We must continue to do what we can to lessen the number of deaths caused by this crisis. Every life saved is more than worth it.”
