HARRISBURG – Rep. Mark Mustio (R-Allegheny), chairman of the House Professional Licensure Committee, announced today his retirement from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, upon the completion of his eighth two-year term on Nov. 30.
“With great strides and victories on major priorities such as legislative reduction, liquor privatization and stopping property tax windfalls after a reassessment in Allegheny County, there is no better time for me to close out my nearly 15.5 years of serving the people of the 44th Legislative District,” said Mustio. “There are still many initiatives I hope to see accomplished, and I plan to stay involved and finish strong.”
A longtime public servant, Mustio was first elected to the state House in a special election on June 17, 2003. Mustio previously had the honor of serving as a Moon Township supervisor and past chairman of the Pittsburgh Airport Area Chamber of Commerce, and on the boards of the Western Area YMCA, Moon Area Excellence in Education Fund and the Airport Corridor Transportation Association.
“When I ran for office, I promised this position was not going to be a career for me,” said Mustio. “I was interested in working in a bipartisan manner to create an environment for development opportunities that brought good jobs throughout the airport corridor. A big part of making that happen is investment in infrastructure. In addition, my legislation mandating property millage rate reductions after a county-wide reassessment helped keep more money in taxpayers’ pockets and helped to make Allegheny County an attractive place for a business to locate.”
In keeping with his economic development agenda, Mustio was the recipient of the Pittsburgh Airport Chamber’s first “Legislative Legacy” Award in April 2015. This award is given in appreciation of an individual’s legacy of leadership, steadfastness and diligence in working for the region’s residents and businesses. He is also the proud recipient of the 2013-14 and 2015-16 NFIB Guardian of Small Business Awards, 2006 Taxpayer Watchdog and 2006 Economic Development and Job Creation awards.
In recognition of his Care Facility Carbon Monoxide Alarms Standard Act becoming law, Mustio was recognized with the Pennsylvania Healthcare Association Better Life Award in January 2017. Act 48 of 2016 requires the installation of carbon monoxide alarms in long-term care facilities, personal care homes and assisted living residences that use fossil fuel heating systems.
“I am particularly grateful to the residents of the 44th District for trusting me with the responsibility to work for them at home and in Harrisburg, and to serve as their voice in the legislative process,” said Mustio. “I would also like to thank my dedicated staff for their tireless efforts and commitment over the years.”
During his nearly 15.5 years in office, Mustio has served as a member of several high-profile committees, including Appropriations, Liquor Control and Environmental Resources and Energy. He was appointed chairman of the House Professional Licensure Committee, where he has served as a member since June 2003, for the 2017-18 legislative session.
“It is extremely rewarding and humbling to represent an area that takes so much pride in working together to strengthen our communities,” said Mustio. “As I prepare to begin life’s next chapter, I am confident that the best is yet to come.”
