HARRISBURG – In a major step toward protecting innocent unborn life, Rep. Stephen Bloom (R-Cumberland) Tuesday joined a majority of his House colleagues in support of Senate Bill 3, legislation which would spare children in the womb from painful and deadly abortion practices.

“We have a responsibility to protect our most vulnerable boys and girls, our innocent unborn sons and daughters, and spare them from pain, suffering and death,” Bloom said. “By ending painful and deadly abortion practices, we are rescuing unborn babies from the gravest danger.”

In addition to abolishing certain painful abortion procedures, Senate Bill 3 would lower risks to mothers and babies by limiting abortions to cases of medical necessity after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Current law prohibits most abortions after 24 weeks of pregnancy.

“At 20 weeks, a baby can roll and kick inside the womb and feel pain,” Bloom said. “Babies born or needing special care at under 24 weeks are surviving and leading healthy lives just like full-term babies. We must give these vulnerable boys and girls the greatest chance of all, the right to life.”

The bill now moves to the governor’s desk. Gov. Tom Wolf has said he plans to veto the measure. Bloom urges constituents to join him in praying that the governor will change his mind and allow the life-saving bill to become law.
