HARRISBURG – State Rep. Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York Township) joined her House colleagues Monday in unanimously passing legislation that addresses the ever-increasing number of women who die from pregnancy complications. The bill may now be considered by the state Senate.
“Despite advances in medicine and medical technologies, the maternal mortality rate in the United States has risen dramatically in recent years,” Phillips-Hill said. “Taking a closer look at this issue at the state level would allow Pennsylvania to do its part in reversing that trend.”
Pennsylvania currently lacks a system for monitoring these cases, unlike its neighboring states. The Centers for Disease Control, which investigates deaths nationally, encourages establishment of these committees as a way of keep closer tabs on pregnancy-related deaths.
“California established a maternal mortality review committee 11 years ago following a spike in pregnancy-related deaths and has seen the trend reverse,” added Phillips-Hill. “We should follow their lead and make a serious effort to evaluate and hopefully prevent future loss of life.”
Questions about this or any legislative issue should be directed to Phillips-Hill’s district office at (717)428-9889 or 1-877-207-2272.
