HARRISBURG – Rep. Jim Struzzi (R-Indiana) today announced that the House of Representatives’ Health Committee has passed two pieces of legislation authored by him – House Bill 1214 and House Resolution 268.

House Bill 1214 would add pain management clinics to the list of health care facilities regulated by the Department of Health. This would help prevent the diversion, misuse and abuse of controlled substances.

“I think it’s important that we understand what these pain management clinics are providing to patients, so we can get a better handle on them as they relate to the opioid crisis that Pennsylvania is seeing today,” said Struzzi.

House Resolution 268 would direct the Joint State Government Commission to study the impact of behavioral health treatment needs, and behavioral health care system capacity, on hospital emergency departments and patient health. Currently, no such study exists.

“As we work to address the drug addiction crisis in the Commonwealth, we need to have knowledge of what we are capable of treating and of areas where we need to improve,” Struzzi continued. “We need to be aware of these shortcomings and equip treatment providers with the resources they need to improve these areas.”

The bill and resolution are now before the House for consideration.
