HARRISBURG – Rep. Seth Grove (R-York) issued the following statement in response to Gov. Tom Wolf’s veto of
House Bill 59, which would have brought sweeping cost-saving reforms, including work requirements for some welfare recipients, to Pennsylvania.
“Today’s action by the governor is very short sighted. According to the State Treasurer Joe Torsella’s Transparency Portal, the Department of Human Services budget has grown by more than $6.1 billion, or 22 percent, since Wolf took office in 2015. House Bill 59 would have reined in spending by requiring the administration to stay within the legally adopted budget.
“Additionally, the legislation would have encouraged those who should be employed to work through job training and work requirements, both of which would have contributed to society and the economy on a whole. Work requirements for Medical Assistance, like similar requirements we have for entitlement programs, would have increased income tax and sales tax revenue through economic growth and empowering Pennsylvanians.
“These commonsense reforms would have drastically helped future years’ budgets, so tax-and-spend politicians in Harrisburg wouldn't have to ask for more of your hard-earned money or pass economy-killing taxes on Pennsylvania job creators.”
