HARRISBURG – The House Education Committee today voted in favor of
House Bill 429, legislation being sponsored by Rep. Rosemary M. Brown (R-Monroe/Pike), which would allow school districts to allow students to apply credits earned through courses in personal financial literacy to satisfy social studies, math or consumer science graduation credit requirements.
“It is critical that individuals learn about saving money, making sound financial decisions, growing their assets and developing a secure financial future for themselves and their future children,” Brown said. “This legislation seeks to help young people acquire the knowledge necessary to make wise financial choices as adults, and I believe high school courses in personal financial literacy should be encouraged.”
House Bill 429 would allow public school students who earn credit for a course in personal financial literacy to use that credit to satisfy a graduation credit requirement in social studies, math or consumer science. This legislation would not require any public school to offer a course in personal financial literacy, nor would it require a student to take such a course. However, it would incentivize school districts and students to complete this coursework, as it would help to fulfill a graduation requirement. The goal of the bill is to recognize the importance of personal finance in education and to have more students receive coursework in this subject.
The bill has been sent to the House for its consideration.
