HARRISBURG – The House Labor and Industry Committee on Tuesday approved Rep. Torren Ecker’s (R-Adams/Cumberland)
House Bill 1522 to modernize requirements for junior firefighters.
Specifically, the legislation would remove a requirement that junior firefighters take Department of Conservation and Natural Resources training on how to battle wildfires. The bill now goes to the full House for consideration.
In response to the bill being moved out of committee, Ecker issued the following statement:
“Pennsylvania’s landscape and demographics have changed drastically since the wildfire training requirement was put in place. Though this training is valuable for some parts of the state, it doesn’t fit all fire departments, especially those in urban and suburban areas. Since this training does serve a purpose in more rural parts of the Commonwealth, fire departments will have the option to require junior firefighters to undergo such training.
“I am glad members of the Labor and Industry Committee saw the merits of this bill and put their support behind our volunteer fire services. I look forward to the House also approving this measure and sending it to the Senate.”
