HARRISBURG - Legislation introduced by Rep. Rick Saccone (R-Allegheny/Washington) which would protect the integrity of the election process passed the House today.
House Bill 171 would permit a registered voter of the Commonwealth to be appointed as a poll watcher in any election district located in Pennsylvania. These poll watchers would be present at polling places for the purposes of maintaining the integrity of the voting process.
“Each election season brings new reports and criminal investigations and prosecutions across the country of alleged instances of illegal voting,” said Saccone. “By passing this piece of legislation and making sure a good supply of poll watchers are available, our state becomes an example of how to ensure a fair election process.”
Last week, Philadelphia City Commissioner Al Schmidt revealed that hundreds of ineligible immigrants illegally voted from 2006-2017 in Philadelphia elections.
“The right to vote in a fair and honest election is one of our core American principles,” said Saccone. “I want to defend the vote of every man and woman, ensuring that only one eligible person votes and that vote is not deluded by fraud.”
The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
