HARRISBURG – The House today unanimously passed legislation by Rep. Kate Klunk (R-Hanover) to protect workers from mandatory restrictive nondisclosure agreements as terms of employment in relation to sexual harassment. The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
“Newspapers have been ripe with headlines of sexual harassment allegations in the film industry. Though not in the news, these allegations happen in other workplaces,” Klunk said. “My House Bill 849 aims to protect all workers and would allow employees to be free from these restrictive nondisclosure agreements.”
Specifically,
House Bill 849 would prohibit employers from requiring employees and prospective employees to sign a nondisclosure agreement related to sexual harassment as a condition of employment. This would ensure workers who face sexual harassment in the workplace can exercise their voice to report such egregious offenses they may suffer at the hands of a co-worker or superior.
Employees and employers would still be able to voluntarily enter into such agreements.
“Sexual harassment is a non-partisan problem and it took cooperation to create this bi-partisan bill,” Klunk said. “It was my honor to work with Rep. Morgan Cephas (D-Philadelphia) to make this bipartisan bill happen.”
