HARRISBURG — House State Government Committee Chairman Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) issued the following statement after the Senate narrowly passed legislation that includes $571 million in new or increased taxes, along with $1.3 billion in new borrowing:

“The Senate’s latest taxpayer-fleecing scheme should be immediately declared dead on arrival by the House Republican majority.

“The Republican majority should never be turned into a functional minority by allowing a minority of Republicans to vote with Democrats to pass any legislation, especially broad-based tax increases on electricity, natural gas, online purchases, telephone bills and/or cable television.

“With the majority of Senate Republicans voting NO to take more out of the wallets of hard-working taxpayers and seniors, this legislation does not deserve any consideration by the House.

“If the majority of Senate Republicans, who voted no on this tax increase, will not hold their Republican leadership accountable for joining with Democrats to take more from hard-working taxpayers, then it’s up to House Republicans to stand up for taxpayers.

“This is precisely why I have signed on to legislation that would mandate an immediate 10 percent reduction in spending for General Government Operations funding, which includes the executive branch, the attorney general’s office, the auditor general’s office, as well as both houses of the General Assembly.

“I will continue to oppose any budget that calls for increased taxes, irresponsible spending and the confiscation of more money from taxpayers’ pockets.”
