Nearly 1 million PA unemployment claims filed in less than two and a half weeks as business shutdown continues and waivers remain inconsistent
HARRISBURG – The number of Pennsylvania’s unemployment compensation claims since March 15 are the highest in the nation. To help address this, Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) announced that House Bill 2400, with nearly 100 co-sponsors, will be assigned to the House State Government Committee with an expected committee vote next week. The bill would allow all public and private construction activities to be undertaken that adhere to mitigation measures set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to protect workers and mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

WHAT: Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-Beaver/Butler/Lawrence) will be hosting a virtual press conference to announce efforts by Ellwood City Borough to combat coronavirus. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is lending its support to the borough and the Commonwealth during this serious time. The Ellwood City Medical Center is in the assessment phase with the Army Corps of Engineers to determine its feasibility. They will complete any work and provide equipment to the medical center.

WHAT: Reps. Aaron Bernstine (R-Beaver/Butler/Lawrence) and Joshua Kail (R-Beaver/Washington) will hold a Facebook press conference after drafting a letter to Gov. Tom Wolf and asking him to issue an executive order to use potential assets of the former Ellwood City Hospital due to the coronavirus crisis. The facility closed its emergency department in December 2019 for numerous safety violations. Months later, the parent company shut down the entire hospital and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
